They say you never appreciate what you've got until it's gone and, in the case of people who got a bit sick of The Eagles hogging all the air time in the late 1970s, that is just sooooo correct. The Eagles were absolutely everywhere. On radio as you drove, at every school party, on television rock shows - they were unavoidable. To say they began to pall is an understatement, but looking back it is hard to see why. The music was terrific, the vocals ahead of any of their contemporaries, and the guitar work … aaah, the guitar work was incomparable. It has taken 20 years and a much-repeated viewing of the DVD Eagles: Hell Freezes Over to realise what a complete bunch of duffers we were to get sick of such a great band and can only put it down to teenage idiocy or tall-poppy syndrome. Mind you, from the introduction scenes from the DVD, the internal pressures of success clearly created problems within the group and their split in 1980 was devastating.
